Just like we can get lots of information about our health by checking our feet (reflexology), we also get many information from our fingernails.
White spots
A lot of white spots on the nails may indicate zinc, iron deficiency or deficiency of calcium and magnesium (too much sweet food and sugar intake cause vitamin deficiency). It could be also deficiency of vitamin E and vitamin A. Although many people say it's a myth, I can tell you it's not. I'm the living proof that I don't hit or do anything with my nails and I get these white spots.
Color
The pale pink, almost white nail color refers to anemia, the blue color refers to circulation disorders. The yellow color indicates liver problems, diabetes, lymphatic diseases or chronic bronchitis, however usually it happens because of the nail polish or nicotine. The gray and black spots can indicate heavy metal poisoning.
The purple nails indicates cardiac disorders.

It's usually common and you don't have to worry about it. We get them as we're getting older. It's a simple sign aging.
Horizontal ridges
Too much stress.
Brittle nails
If you wash your hands a lot then your nails can turn to brittle. It also indicate kidney problems, thyroid and circulation problems.
