Mica powder

Last week I got a question about what exactly Mica powder is and what I think about it.

Coastal Scents has Mica powders and their main ingredients are Mica and Titanium Dioxide. I checked the blue one: it contains Mica, Titanium Dioxide and Ferric Ferrocyanide.

Mica is a silicate mineral (Silicate minerals all contain silicon and oxygen). It is sourced from rocks, so it can contain trace levels of dangerous heavy metals. The FDA regulates the levels of heavy metals in consumer products and regulates the level of mica in products as well, so it's ok to use.

However....

Mica may cause respiratory irritation especially to those with asthma. ( It does effect the body if you inhale it.)

It can be quite irritating to sensitive skin, particularly those suffering from rosacea or eczema. So if you have sensitive skin (like me) it's better if you don't use mineral powder with mica in it, cause you will have blemishes for sure.

It may cause cystic acne lesions as well.

In powder form if you inhaled and if it's in a big amount in a product, then it's harmful . This is the second ingredient and it's powder, so it looks fishy for me...

"Representatives from Health Canada (National Office of WHMIS) recently consulted with the Quebec CSST and CCOHS (the two main agencies providing WHMIS classifications to the public) regarding the implications of the IARC decision to the WHMIS classification of titanium dioxide. It was agreed that titanium dioxide does now meet the criteria for WHMIS D2A (carcinogen) based on the information released by IARC to date, and that it is not necessary to wait for release of the full monograph.

Manufacturers and suppliers of titanium dioxide are advised to review and update their material safety data sheets and product labels based on this new information as soon as possible." (Canadian Center of Occupational Health and Safety)

Ferric Ferrocyanide

Ferric Ferrocyanide is a deep blue cosmetic colourant. It is regarded as safe on the surface of the skin, but is considered toxic if leaked into water supply.
